Can you believe it’s already September? We certainly can’t. If you’re not quite ready to let go of summer, don’t worry—there are still plenty of outdoor activities around RVA that you can take advantage of well into the fall! Here are some of our favorites: Stop by your local farmers market. While the summer is a great time to pick up some in-season fruits and veggies, many farmers markets around Richmond stay open throughout the fall! No matter if you live in the city or the ‘burbs, there’s a local market near you. Some of our favorites are the South of the James Market, the West End Farmers Market, and the Lakeside Farmers Market. Explore the James River. Every weekend in the summer, Richmonders flock to the James to kayak, canoe, or tube down the river. But with these hot temps continuing into September, why limit river days to the summer months? If your fall schedule is busy, try walking the Potterfield Memorial Bridge across the river from Brown’s Island to Manchester. From the bridge, you can take in the breathtaking view of the city. Or, pack a picnic and head down to the James River Pipeline Walkway off 14th Street. Catch an outdoor movie. Cooler nights mean it’s the perfect time to head to the Goochland Drive-In Theater to catch a movie (or two!). They show double features of recently released movies every Friday and Saturday night, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. With the affordable prices of tickets and concessions, the drive-in theater is the perfect spot for a family night out, date night, or evening with friends. Make sure you arrive early, though—they tend to fill up quickly! Enjoy some live music. Outdoor concerts are a summer fave, but many local venues continue to host shows through the fall. Innsbrook After Hours still has a handful of September dates before the end of its season, and Forest Hill Park’s Music in the Park concert series continues into October. You can also stop by weekly live music events like James River Cellars’ Fridays on the Patio, with a different live band every Friday until the end of September. Summer ending doesn’t mean giving up your favorite outdoor activities. Head outside and enjoy all that Richmond has to offer in the fall!
